Migration is one of the most pressing global challenges of our time, intersecting with critical questions of identity, belonging, power, and inequality. This seminar takes an interdisciplinary approach to examining key issues surrounding migration and displacement, drawing on literature from anthropology, migration and diaspora studies, and gender studies. Students will engage with foundational and contemporary theories of migration, citizenship, transnationalism, and borders, complemented by case studies from diverse regions.Particular attention will be given to Europe more broadly, with a focused exploration of Germany, analyzing the social, political, and cultural dimensions of migration through ethnographic studies. In addition to conceptual and empirical readings, students will participate in practical exercises, including fieldwork-inspired activities and critical reflections, fostering a nuanced understanding of the dynamics shaping migration, urban socail transformations, and the lived experiences of migrants.
