What makes a photograph or a film ethnographic? How can a visual element - be it a photograph, a film or another medium - contribute to ethnographic fieldwork? How has the visual medium developed over time? These exciting and important questions can only be understood if we first clarify a fundamental question: ‘What is visual anthropology?’ This question is at the centre of this seminar.
Visual methods have been used in ethnographic research from its beginnings to the present day. In the beginning, films and photographs were used, later new methods were added with the development of digital technology. Visual anthropologists deal with the cultural meanings of visual representations and the visual recording of cultural practices in ethnographic contexts.
The focus of this seminar is on the examination of central ideas and examples from the history of visual anthropology through the viewing and analysis of international ethnographic films and texts. The course offers an introduction to the theories of visual anthropology and provides students with a basic understanding of these theories, including key debates and methodologies. The seminar combines lectures and class discussions, readings (assigned and independent) and film examples in class.
