Have you ever wondered what it takes to make an ethnographic documentary film? In this course, students receive a thorough introduction to the craft of documentary filmmaking. They acquire fundamental skills that they can apply in their respective research projects and beyond. The lessons combine two elements: watching and analysing international documentaries and producing their own short documentary film. By watching and analysing international documentaries, students learn about the production process – from idea development and pre-production to camera, sound and editing. During the semester, students work on their own short film or visual project and are guided from the initial draft to production and editing. At the end of the semester, students present their projects. By learning to analyse documentary film examples and creating their own ethnographic films, students acquire valuable skills and media literacy in this important form of communication. Upon completion of this course, they will be able to identify the basic elements of documentary films and apply theme, structure, perspective and style to a short film.
