The introductory lecture series provides foundational theoretical knowledge and offers insight into the approaches and key questions of Cultural Studies/European Ethnology.The winter semester introduces central concepts of the discipline in the 21st century, such as culture, language, borders, tradition, identity, everyday life, emotions, policies, Europe, and more. The lecture series also provides an insight into the history of the discipline both within the German-speaking context and from a broader international perspective.
In the summer semester, the lecture introduces students to the major theories of culture developed in the 20th century, including evolutionism, functionalism, cultural relativism, structuralism, social constructivism, postcolonialism, and the British Cultural Studies school.
