Requirements / organisational issues

As part of the course, students may attend a professional academic event (e.g., departmental colloquium, excursion, or specialist conference). In doing so, they will experience relevant academic offerings and gain insights into the everyday life of academic work.
There are three options in the winter semester 2025:

  1. Mainz Colloquium in European Ethnology
  2. DGEKW Congress
  3. Research Forum at the FTMK

Mainz Colloquium in European Ethnology
The Mainz Colloquium in European Ethnology is a lecture series taking place during the winter semester 2025 on Tuesdays from 12:00 to 14:00. The speakers are cultural studies scholars who present and discuss their research with us as part of the Wednesday colloquium. For some students, this colloquium counts as a regular course. It helps our academic staff stay engaged with current debates and research perspectives in the discipline, while students have the opportunity to hear engaging talks on a wide range of topics and become more familiar with academic research practices.
Students are warmly invited to participate in discussions with the speakers at at least five sessions.
As proof of active participation, students are required to submit a written report focusing primarily on one of the lectures, while also drawing connections to at least two other talks. Reports must be uploaded to Moodle. Further information will follow once the lecture schedule is finalized.
We wish you an enjoyable and enlightening experience watching, discussing, and reflecting!

Excursion to the 45th Congress of the German Society for Empirical Cultural Studies (DGEKW) in Kiel, October 1–4, 2025
Prof. Dr. Carna Brkovic
The biennial congress of the German Society for Empirical Cultural Studies (DGEKW) in 2025 is themed: "Surprise, Chance, Contingency: On the Indeterminate in Society and Culture." It aims to explore academic engagement with the unexpected in everyday life from various perspectives.
At the 45th Congress of the German Society for Empirical Cultural Studies (DGEKW), nearly one hundred contributions will be presented that examine the role and significance of indeterminacy in society and science. Surprise, chance, and contingency will be explored not only for their negative potential in terms of disruption, interference, or uncertainty, but also for their creative and productive capacities. The focus includes diverse everyday cultural fields of action (such as labor processes, migration, household, social relationships, insurance systems), as well as contingent elements within the cultural research process itself (methodology, data collection, data management, fieldwork). Special attention will be given to different spheres of representation (in media, museums, exhibitions, social media, etc.).
Congress website and registration portal: https://www.dgekw-kongress.de/

As proof of active participation, students must submit a report focusing primarily on one of the panels or keynote lectures, while also connecting it to at least two other panels or talks. Reports are to be uploaded to Moodle. Further details will be provided once the presentation schedule is available.
The excursion includes an online preparatory meeting and a follow-up session in person during the semester.

Research Forum
The Research Forum is an open discussion space available to all FTMK staff members, their peers, and interested students. Its aim is to foster the productive and interdisciplinary development of innovative and original ideas—serving as a complement to the more formal academic colloquia.
As proof of active participation, students must submit a report focusing primarily on one of the sessions, while also connecting it to at least two other sessions. Reports are to be uploaded to Moodle. Further details will be provided once the presentation schedule is available.
