Today, technology shapes our everyday lives to an enormous extent and in multilayered ways. Many implementations of technology have become so ordinary to us that we hardly notice them nor question their very existence. Living in intelligent environments or even smart homes is a current development that does not occur to us as outstandingly novel anymore. The use of technologies entangles with our everyday practices, influencing our behavior, thoughts and expectations. Technologies determine our lives before we are born, e.g. through prenatal diagnostics, and care technology’s machines and robots may shape the living environment in our residential homes for the elderly. Machines and computers facilitate tasks at work or even substitute parts of human work completely. Hence, technology is interpreted as blessing and threat alike. Our views on technology and our capacities to interact with it have been historically and culturally shaped and determined. We will look into ideas that derive from film or literary fiction and question historical and current-day practices and behaviors associated with new technologies. This seminar is taught in English. All course readings and student presentations are also in English. Nevertheless, oral exams for passing the module („Modulabschlussprüfung“) can be taken in German.
