From parties to protests to Zoom meetings – events and programs gather bodies and images. In the political sphere, assemblies refer to fundamental forms of participation in which conflicts and commonalities are negotiated. In addition to the temporary gathering of bodies, cinemas, parliaments, clubs, theaters, train stations, shopping malls, marketplaces, stadiums, storage spaces and churches refer to permanent architectures and infrastructures of gathering that guide people and things. This also applies to digital platforms, archives and libraries that collect large bundles of data. They create a permanent and at the same time variable order of things.
Whether street blockades, content moderation on social media or binary-gendered toilets – the way in which people, data or things assemble is in many cases a powerful process that creates realities and determines agency and visibility. In view of the precarious situation in refugee camps, the restitution of post-colonial museum collections, but also the restricted access to higher educational institutions, we can ask: Which assemblies are legitimate, what kind of assemblies produce what kind of spaces, which forms of knowledge, which inclusions and exclusions?
The seminar investigates various forms of assembling and gathering and examines the underlying power dynamics by jointly reading and discussing texts, watching films and writing small reflections. The aim is to develop independent, self-contained works. The work can be a written term paper, a magazine, a website, a film or a performative work. The focus of the seminar is on teaching the ability to create coherent concepts and their implementation in suitable media. The work in the course will take place in interdisciplinary teams.
