Post-socialism is an important field of research for cultural and social anthropology. Even before the end of the USSR and Yugoslavia, anthropologists were conducting research in some socialist countries and analyzing the social and economic organization of these societies. In the 1990s, anthropological research in the former socialist regions experienced an upswing. The focus of this research was on social, cultural, and economic transformations, as well as on local interpretations of global changes. In recent years, the notion of post-socialism as a category of analysis has been increasingly challenged. In this seminar we will read ethnographies and theoretical texts dealing with (post-)socialist societies of Eurasia in order to explore the multiple facets and meanings of this phenomenon for the social sciences.Dates
